The class teacher is referred to as the potion master. A post occupied at Hogwarts for several years by Severus Snape and Horace Slughorn.
The books are the main source for potion-making instructions and recipes. But having the instruction at hand is not enough to make a good potion.
Making a potion requires the delicate respect of the timing, aging, stirring techniques, and ingredient types.
