A monstrous, human-speech-capable spider with venomous fangs. Aragog, Hagrid's beloved pet, led a colony in the Forbidden Forest.

A thin, grey serpent that hatches from the embers of an unattended magical fire. Its eggs are extremely hot and highly venomous.

An Irish Phoenix-like bird whose mournful cry was once believed to foretell death. In truth it only predicts rain.

A Japanese water-dwelling creature resembling a monkey with a scaly body. It attacks humans to drink their blood. Politely bowing causes it to spill the water in its head hollow.

Water Horse
A shape-shifting water creature that most commonly takes the form of a horse. It lures victims onto its back, then drags them underwater. Repelled by a bridle.
Kneazle
Cat-Like
A small, spotted, lion-eared animal with high intelligence. Can detect untrustworthy characters. Crookshanks is part-Kneazle. Can interbreed with ordinary cats.

House-Elf
The ancient, self-loathing Black family house-elf, initially surly and difficult. His true loyalty emerges through his devotion to Regulus Black's memory.

A wizard-bred animal resembling a Jack Russell terrier with a forked tail. Loyal to wizards, aggressive toward Muggles.

Small, Irish creatures producing gold that vanishes after a few hours (Leprechaun gold). They appeared at the 1994 Quidditch World Cup supporting Ireland.

A deadly creature resembling a black cloak that suffocates sleeping victims and digests them. Nearly impossible to detect. Only repelled by the Patronus Charm.

A small sea creature that propels itself by squirting venom from its snout. Used as a weapon by Merpeople. Strictly regulated in the wizarding world.

A demon-like creature resembling a stunted piglet with a long thin tail. Brings misfortune to farms if undetected. The longer it stays, the greater the blight.
Norwegian Ridgeback
Dragon
A rare Norwegian dragon breed — black, aggressive, and one of the few dragons that eats water-dwelling mammals. Hagrid hatched one named Norbert.

An enormous, leopard-like East African beast whose breath causes disease capable of devastating entire villages. Considered the most dangerous creature alive.

Electric-blue Cornish Pixies are fast, mischievous, and strong enough to lift humans by the ears. Lockhart memorably failed to contain a whole cage of them.

A round, fluffy, custard-yellow creature that emits soft humming while content. It feeds by inserting its long tongue into noses and mouths to eat mucus. Popular as a pet.

A small creature resembling a goblin that lurks in dark places where blood has been shed. Attacks Muggles (and sometimes wizards) who wander alone.

A small lizard that lives in fire and feeds on flames. It cannot survive long outside its element. Related to Muggles' non-magical variety only in name.

Rat (Animagus)
Ron's supposedly ordinary rat, kept for twelve years — far longer than normal. Revealed to be Peter Pettigrew (Wormtail) hiding in his Animagus form.

A large, ocean-dwelling serpentine creature. Despite its fearsome appearance, it is classified as not particularly dangerous in most circumstances.

Sea Creature
A fish covered in spines. Created by wizards to torment Muggle fishermen by puncturing their nets — reflecting an old dispute between the two communities.
Sphinx
Hybrid Beast
A creature with a human head and a lion's body, native to Egypt. Highly intelligent and fond of riddles. Harry encountered one in the Triwizard Tournament's maze.
Streeler
Snail
A giant snail that changes colour hourly and leaves a trail so venomous it kills all vegetation it crosses. Kept by some as a pet due to its striking colour changes.
Swooping Evil

A large, butterfly-like creature that, when contracted, resembles a green spiked ball. It feeds on brains. Its venom, diluted, erases bad memories.

Thestral
Winged Horse
Dark, skeletal, winged horses visible only to those who have witnessed and accepted death. They pull the Hogwarts carriages. Believed to be unlucky, but harmless.
Three-Headed Dog
Magical Beast
See Fluffy. A Cerberus-like creature used to guard valuables. Immensely strong and territorial; the only known way to calm one is with music.

Amphibian
Non-magical but popular as a Hogwarts pet, especially with Neville Longbottom, whose toad Trevor regularly escaped. Less fashionable as pets than owls or cats.
Troll
Giant Being
Enormous, dim-witted, and violent humanoid creatures. Mountain Trolls are the most dangerous. A Mountain Troll loose in Hogwarts on Halloween is Harry and Ron's earliest adventure.

Unicorn
Magical Horse
A pure white horse with a single spiral horn. Its blood sustains life even near death, but at a great cost. Its tail hair and horn are used in wand-making and potions.

Vampire
Dark Being
Blood-drinking creatures that appear in human form. Referenced in the wizarding world as real creatures, though less prominent than in Muggle mythology.
Veela
Spirit
Magical beings of supreme beauty who can entrance all men. Their allure disappears when angered — they transform into harpy-like creatures. Fleur Delacour is part-Veela.

Welsh Green
Dragon
A native British dragon breed, quieter and less aggressive than most. Its preferred prey is sheep. Well-known for the Ilfracombe Incident of 1932.
Werewolf

A human who involuntarily transforms into a wolf at the full moon. The condition is transmitted through biting. Remus Lupin is the most prominent werewolf in the series.

Several breeds exist: Abraxan (huge palominos), Aethonan (chestnut), Granian (grey, fast), and Thestrals. Used to pull Beauxbatons' carriage.

A less powerful relative of the true dragon — two legs rather than four. Features in some wizarding heraldry. Classified as a beast.

Giant Beast
Also called the Muggle's 'Abominable Snowman'. An enormous white-furred beast found in the mountains of Tibet. Classified as a beast rather than a being.

Zouwu
Feline Beast
An enormous, powerful, and incredibly fast cat-like creature from China. Despite its frightening size, the one Newt Scamander encountered was easily calmed by a toy.
