Azkaban is a fortress on an island in the middle of the sea. It serves the magical community of Great Britain as a prison for convicted criminals.
So many horrible tales surround the place. Prisoners going insane and dying out of pure despair is a common thing in Azkaban.
However, there are several advantages to using this building as a prison.
Firstly, it is isolated in the middle of a sea with violent currents that form an effective barrier against prisoners who would try to escape and would have to face the sea to reach the mainland.
The hostile atmosphere of the prison also has an impressive side that can act on the morale of the prisoners, this impression was reinforced until 1998 by the Dementors who acted as guards at the prison.
The evil power of the Dementors allowed these creatures to feed on the good feelings of the prisoners to leave them with only despair, making the inmates weaker.
It can also be assumed that Azkaban is protected by many protective charms, such as anti-apparition spells, to hold the prisoners and prevent them from escaping.
Each prisoner's wand is also confiscated to prevent them from using magic to try to escape.
