The pure giants are not as intelligent as wizards but they are able to communicate, both in their native language and occasionally in English. They live in tribes in the mountains, led by a giant leader.
They are violent by nature: Giant fights are frequent, and if a Muggle accidentally finds himself in the middle of one of their melees, he is certain to die. Giants are also very suspicious of wizards and magic.
There was a time when giants were a force to be reckoned with in the wizarding world, there were once at least a hundred tribes scattered across the globe.
Then, in the 1970s, the giants joined forces with Voldemort and were responsible for the most violent massacres, especially of Muggles.
Most of the giants were killed by the Aurors and the survivors fled into hiding for the next fifteen years.
Naturally, partly because of the giants' alliance with Voldemort and partly because of the Magic World's general distrust of "semi-humans," the giants have a very bad reputation.
